A Tactical Retreat

Whenever I watch the inauguration of a new president I am drawn to the prayer given by the greying Bishop presiding over the ceremony, I think when will be the last time a Prince of the Church will be invited to such an occassion, a hundred years from now? two? Our Church is fast fading into irrelevancy and the aging hierarchy has barely noticed, reforms and reformers have shaped the Church to their whim to the dismay of elderly grandmothers everywhere who still cover their head in deference to God, to the embarassment of reformist prelates. From ritual to language to the very superiority of the Church as the true religion, everything has been shaken by the reformers except perhaps something fundamental, going all the way back to Constantine and Theodosius and continued to through the prayer of the greying Bishop - the Church-State collaboration.

The Church-State relationship should ideally be harmonious and complementary, with some examples being the kingships of Louis IX or Emperor Ferdinand II. But by the 19th century the Church had taken the institution of Monarchy for granted and in its hubris thought it could easily substitute a Catholic Monarchy for the Secular Republic. Leo XIII said as much when he ordered the Catholics to be faithful to the anti-clerical French Republic only to be surprise Pikachu faced when the moneychangers and freemasons of that Republic destroyed Catholic influence in society with the laicite laws of 1905. The Church since then has maintained this policy of feeble collaborationism, imitating its vaunted status in society when the kings of old reigned with tired pronouncements next to bemused heads of states. The laws of all these countries progressively distancing themselves from the positions of the Church as the decades passed.

The Church needs to admit that it has been defeated in open combat, the forces of liberalism have captured every institution, going back even to the mid 19th century when the lügenpresse hounded Pius IX for his role in the salvation of the soul of Edgardo Mortara and calling for the end of the supposedly antiquated insitution of the Papal States.

The Church must return to its roots and become subversive as its message has become subversive once more. Say in public that marriage should be between a man and a woman, say for instance that you shoudn't kill your offspring for conveniance and you will get "cancelled". The message of our Lord and Saviour has become radical once more and so too has the State become like Pagan Rome as the bonds that have tied it to Christendom become weaker and weaker. The Church must come as Christ with a sword in hand and the Gospel as its shield, it must look to the Apostles, most of whom were martyred.

The word and deed of Martyrdom must become central once more for the faith in these dark times. We must learn to thirst for it, we must crave it in our souls for what death can be greater than that for God against those that would raise their arms against him and for the growth of his Church. The Church must retreat into the margins of society, it must leave its palaces and cathedrals, it must suffer persecution once more. Only then through this guerilla warfare of evangelization can it re-emerge stronger than ever before, this is the only alternative to the slow fading irrelevancy it is doomed to with its current leadership.
